In Ancient Greece it was considered food for the Gods of Olympus, while in Ancient Rome it was intended only for the esophagus of the aristocrats. In the Middle Ages, at the same time, artichokes were equivalent to exotic food and were available exclusively to kings.

The role of Zeus

According to Greek mythology, the first artichoke was actually a beautiful, young mortal woman named Kynara, who lived on an Aegean island.

One day Zeus visited Poseidon’s brother and suddenly saw Kynara swimming on the shores of the island. He immediately fell in love with her and made her a goddess to be next to him on Olympus.

However, Kynara felt nostalgic for her old way of life and very often she secretly left Olympus and went down to her island. When Zeus realized this, being blinded by jealousy, he became angry and turned Kynara into a plant.

The superfoods of the Mediterranean

This plant is now called artichoke and is produced mainly in the Mediterranean. It has been used as food for more than 3,000 years, thanks to its healing properties.

After all, it is no coincidence that it is considered a superfood, having a high concentration of antioxidants and vitamins K – C, while helping to reduce sugar, improve the digestive system, good heart function and intestinal health.
