The absent father and English racism
Pierce Brosnan was born in 1953 in the town of Nevan, Ireland, and was the only child of a family abandoned by his father Thomas, a poor carpenter, when he was an infant. He was forced to grow up with his grandparents and then some uncles, after his mother Margaret was forced to go to London to work as a nurse and raise her only son. While living in Ireland he attended a church school, which operated under the direction of the Christian Brothers religious community. As he himself has stated, he has the worst impressions of this school and he described it as oppressive and with teachers who stood out for their hypocrisy and their cruelty. In the middle of the decade he will escape from the oppressive environment and go to live with his mother and stepfather. In London he will enroll at the Elliott School, which he left at sixteen, wanting to become a painter. In London he will also experience racism as an Irishman and as he has said “the English have a wonderful way of making you feel like a foreigner”. For a short time he will work in a fire-breathing circus, until he enrolls at the Drama Center in London, to become an actor. There, he felt liberated and began to confidently realize his destiny.
From the board, to TV and to the cinema
After graduating from the Drama Center in 1975, he began working initially as an assistant stage manager at the Theater Royal in York, where he then made his debut in the play Wait Until Dark. This will be followed by the role of McCabe in the play “The Red Devil Battery Sign” by Tennessee Williams, who chose him. In 1977 he will star in “Filumena” by Eduardo DeFilippo, directed by Franco Zeffirelli.
Beginning to establish himself in the field from the positive reviews he received in the theater, Brosnan would continue with quite interesting roles, until he decided to take the next step in his career, moving to Southern California, taking the lead role in the sitcom ” NBC’s Remington Steele, playing a romantic detective. His success would also give him his first major role in the well-known Cold War espionage thriller The Fourth Protocol (1987) alongside Michael Caine, and other films and several television appearances would follow.

The first loss and 007
And while his name had already been heard for the next James Bond, given that Roger Moore was now clearly showing his age, Brosnan’s wife – since 1980 – Cassandra Harris, a very beautiful and glamorous Australian actress, will get some role in “For Your Eyes Only” which will premiere in 1981 and will bring him close to the producer of the films Albert Broccoli. However, the role of James Bond is not primary in the story, but the illness of his beloved Cassandra, with whom he had a child and adopted her two children from a previous marriage. He will stand by her with self-sacrifice until the end. Her death will cost him dearly, he will be depressed and it will take him four years to start his life again, meeting reporter Keely Shay Smith. He married her in 2001 in Ireland and they have two children.
Vulnerable
June 7, 1994 will be a particularly significant date for Brosnan, as the working-class kid from humble Nevan, Ireland, will be announced as the fifth actor to play James Bond. He would star in “Operation Golden Eyes” (1995), a film that would gross $350 million worldwide. His performance will completely satisfy the producers, while he was described as “more sensitive, more vulnerable, more complete psychologically”. Two more successful James Bond films would follow, 1997’s Tomorrow Never Dies and 1999’s The World Is Not Enough, while he would close the 007 cycle with the mediocre Die Another Day in 2002.

Western, Blair and “Mama Mia”
The sequel would have several appearances, often in unremarkable films, but also some very good films. Among his good performances and films are the suspenseful western “Enemies Forever”, with Liam Neeson next to him, and Roman Polanski’s extremely interesting political thriller “Invisible Author” in the role of a former British prime minister, clearly referring to Tony Blair, with his controversial past and dark involvement in the Iraq war. He will also score hits in the romantic musical Mama Mia opposite Meryl Streep and the commercial disaster thriller Dante’s Peak.
The second loss…
In 2013, however, he will experience yet another tragedy, as he will lose his stepdaughter Charlotte, from his first marriage to Cassandra Harris and indeed from the same disease as her mother, cancer. He will find the courage again, to continue his life, but more as a man who cares for his neighbor, with special charity work, but also picking up the paint brushes again, following his heart.
The poor boy, Bond and real life
Pierce Brosnan, who is now a grandfather of four grandchildren, continues to act, mostly as a “guest star”, but also always claiming a role that he can be proud of. No, James Bond, he does not want to erase him from his path in the spectacle. After all, he does not forget that he started out as a poor, working-class child, who went through a lot, met his father many years after his birth and was disappointed by him once again, while he lost his only child, Cassandra, but also her daughter, with the same excruciating ending, as a reminder of real life…
