British songwriter, Ed Sheeran, has every reason to be happy, having managed to win a second lawsuit in Manhattan copyright court. The case was about the similarities between his success “Thinking Out Loud” and of “Let’s Get It On” by Marvin Gaye.

Judge Louis Stanton dismissed the case brought by Structured Asset Sales LLC (SAS), ruling that the parts of “Let’s Get It On” that Sheeran was accused of “stealing” were too common for copyright protection.

It is worth noting that the singer won another lawsuit earlier this month – on the same issue – with the heirs of Marvin Gaye. Sheeran’s lawyer, Ilene Farkas, called the decision a major victory, not only for Ed and his partner, Amy Wadge, but for all songwriters.

Speaking outside court, the singer said: ‘I’m just a guy with a guitar who loves to write music for people to enjoy. I am not and will not allow myself to become a “piggy bank”. He added: “Obviously I’m very happy with the outcome of the case and it looks like I won’t have to retire from my day job after all. At the same time, I am incredibly disappointed that baseless allegations have reached the courtrooms.”
