Benedict Cumberbatch said he was “happy” he did not start his career as a child actor.
The protagonist of “The Power of the Dog” stressed that he wanted to become an actor after watching performances of his mother, actress Wanda Venthom, but was discouraged by his parents who spoke of a “ridiculous choice of profession”.
“It occurred to me very early on to see my mother play roles,” Benedict Cumberbatch told wmagazine.
“I was not a child actor, I’m happy about that. “I have nothing against people like the worthy members of my cast, but I’m glad I had that experience.”
“My parents discouraged me, of course they did,” he said.
“They were old enough to tell me it was a ridiculous choice of profession,” he said.
But describing the moment he revealed his ambitions to them, he said: “We were in a parking lot, I must have been 20 years old. I was at university. I was impersonating Antonio Salieri at Amadeus, and I went out and said goodnight to them, and Dad grabbed me by the shoulder and said, “Look, you’re better at this now than I ever was or will ever be.”
I really enjoy it, and this is my job. “I am excited to show it to them and share it with them,” he stressed.
Benedict Cumberbatch’s father, Timothy Carlton, had a distinguished career in theater and television.
