Travelers passing through Chicago’s O’Hare Airport’s Multi-Modal Facility—a structure that connects all of the airport’s ground transportation—are greeted as they move through a high-ceilinged atrium by a monumental sculpture by Hank Willis Thomas and Coby Kennedy.

Emerging from the walls of the escalator hall two huge arms – about 8.3 meters and 9.5 meters – reach towards each other as if to shake hands.

The project, named ‘REACH’, takes its cue from where it is placed within a busy transport hub and redefines a place of temporary residence into a reminder of companionship and relationship.

“‘REACH’ is a point of connection and a large-scale gesture that inspires us to come together,” says Thomas, who often incorporates hands and arms into his works in symbolic poses such as hugs and others.
