The project concerns a network of hiking and cycling routes, with a total length of 350 km, of which 250 km are cycling routes and 100 km are hiking routes
An organized network of paths, with the aim of becoming a pole of attraction for alternative tourism, wants to develop municipality of Veria. Recently, a proposal was submitted to the Natural Environment and Climate Change Organization (O.FY.PE.K.A.) for the “Creation of a national network of walking paths and routes”in order to finance its implementation.
The project concerns a network of hiking and cycling routes, with a total length of 350 km, of which 250 km are cycling routes and 100 km are hiking routes (recreational paths, educational – thematic paths, accessible to people with disabilities, living paths).
The network connects settlements with points of interest in the area, such as waterfalls, peaks, archaeological sites, monasteries, etc. 25% of these routes are developed within the Natura 2000 protected area in the Special Conservation Zones named “Mount Vermio” and “Stena Aliakmona” .
The proposed path network passes through Kato Vermio, Panagia Soumela, the village of Xirolivados, the villages of Kastania, Sfikia and Rizomata. It is estimated that Vermio is suitable for hiking and mountain biking and that it is an ideal mountain destination for both beginners and families. Most routes are developed around the ski center of Selio and from the mountain settlements of Koumaria, Kato Vermio, Xirolivado etc. At a lower altitude there are routes near the archaeological site of Vergina and the Aliakmonas river.
During the implementation of the project, direction signs and confirmation signs will be placed, while at the starting points of the paths there will be central signs with a map and information about the proposed routes.
“Veria occupies a central role in the network as cycling routes start or end there. In addition, a route within the city has been designed, with the aim of allowing the visitor to get to know the urban fabric and the picturesque “Barbuta”“, emphasizes the mayor, Konstantinos Borgiazidis.
In the framework of the program, in addition to the restoration of the paths, maps for mobile phones, a site with information on the network of routes and points of interest, promotional videos and photographic material and a promotion campaign will be designed.
