The female vocal ensemble CHÓRESunder her artistic direction Marina Sattipresents one unique concert at the Stavros Niarchos Hall of the National Operathe Tuesday, June 13, at 8:30 p.m. With the participation of the full composition of the choir, CHÓRES proposes a dynamic polyphonic program, where famous choral arrangements of traditional tunes from all corners of Hellenism are intertwined with new transcriptions of folk songswritten specifically for the set of distinguished contemporary composers.
With over a hundred female participants on stage, CHÓRES approaches this eclectic repertoire with the fresh and unconventional eye that characterizes this unique ensemble’s steadily rising career, illuminating traditional musical material in contemporary, unexpected ways and highlighting the distinct vocal and kinesthetic abilities of their members.
The concert program includes works by Michalis Adamis, Yiannis Giannakos, Yiannis Ioannidis, Alexandros Kapsokavadis, Petros Klabanis, Zoltan Kondai, Marthas Mavroidis, Alki Baltas, Laios Bartos, Christos Samaras, Nikos Skalkotas, Angelos Triantaphyllos and Filippos Tsalachouris. The ensemble is directed by the chief musicians Irini Patsea, Christina Poupalou and Simela Emmanuilidou and the choreographers Stavros-Alexandros Iqbal and Katerina Foti supervise the kinesiology.
The women’s vocal ensemble CHÓRES is an artistic nursery formed in 2018 and aimed at women of all ages who share a love for traditional music and polyphonic singing. It aims both at systematically cultivating the skills of its members in music, singing, dancing and acting, and at shaping them as artists with broad education and social awareness.
After five years of successful performances in Greece and abroad, as well as continuous study, the ensemble counts today more than 150 women, aged from 15 to 60 yearswhich are practiced on a regular basis across the spectrum of the performing arts.
With music as a central axis, CHÓRES seek to utilize all of their expressive means with a view to both highlighting the richness of traditional music and exploiting it through the creation of contemporary artistic works that combine the musical material of the past with the aesthetics of today . Their eclectic repertoire includes from traditional Greek songs to songs from the Balkans and the Eastern Mediterranean.
