On the outskirts of Thessaloniki there is a “secret” attraction, which few people know about and visit: the impressive Macedonian tomb of Agios Athanasios, a work of the last quarter of the 4th century BC. century.

In the area of Agios Athanasios 25 km west of Thessalonica is the majestic and excellently preserved tomb of an eminent Macedonian military Companion – i.e. General of Alexander the Great who was lucky enough to return from the campaign in Asia.

The monument was discovered in the summer of 1994 by the archaeologist Mrs. Maria Tsibidou-Avloniti and her collaborators, and she was literally captivated by its beauty and the importance of the performances.

The small, single-chamber Macedonian tomb was found captured but decorated with frescoes, with amazing colors and in a very good state of preservation.

The frescoes depict hoplite soldiers, banquet scenes and men on foot and on horseback with torches, while the pediment of the tomb is decorated with mythical griffins with all-gold wings.

Impressive are the eternal guards of the deceased – two young Macedonians, almost life-size – who stand silently at the entrance to the tomb.

Above them are painted 2 shields with depictions of Medusa and lightning.
