Chris Isaak he is a great singer. With a career that spans, at least, three decades, he has proven even more that he has the talent to experiment with different styles of music and put his personal “stamp” on everything. And yet, he is the handsome prince who could have reigned, and did.

This American musician, with the demeanor of an old Hollywood star, “devoured” the 90s in one bite. His success was sensational with two near-perfect albums: Heart Shaped World (1989) and Forever Blue (1995). From his debut in 1985 until the end of the 90’s he released several albums, which were “diamonds”.

A new form had emerged in American music, capable of paving an alternative path to grunge, pop, traditional country, and almost any genre. Isaak seemed to be in a genre of his own after these two albums.

He revealed himself as an artist with a commanding voice and unrivaled stage presence. It gave us something approaching the well-understood craving for solitude. It was noir music. Elegant, melodramatic and cinematic music. So much so that his songs have been featured in movies like ‘Eyes Wide Shut’, ‘True Romance’, ‘Wild at Heart’ and ‘Blue Velvet’.

Looking in the mirror, Isaak had no problem seeing the image of Elvis Presley or Roy Orbison. In fact, comparisons to them were constant throughout his career. One could also mention Tony Bennett and Frank Sinatra. Major figures who made hearts ‘flutter’ as if life depended on their overwhelmingly emotional songs. The problem was that this reflection was always a double-edged sword and ended up obscuring a part of his musical path.

There is no doubting this artist’s singing credentials. He managed to escape the clichés and prove, as another great talent of the 90s, Jeff Buckley, pointed out, that he can do it all. Rock, soul, folk, country … pop. Isaak arrived in 2023 after a long wandering in music, in which he always showed confidence and quality.

The handsome prince might have had a bigger kingdom, it’s true, but that shouldn’t matter either, as long as his voice is still so deep and passionate…
