Actress Claudia Raia, 56, recorded a video on social networks to apologize for statements considered capacitist in the Mais Você program last Tuesday (4). At the time, she used the term “bunch of retards” to describe how she and her husband felt when following the development of their young son.
“Luca already recognizes, he knows who is who, he learned to play hide and seek. […] We look like a bunch of retards”, she said, referring to the way she and Jarbas Homem de Mello rediscover their childish side when playing with the youngest.
After criticism, Claudia recanted. “I’m here to apologize for an inappropriate word I used in Mais Você. We’re learning every day to use words properly. It’s always good to have you showing us what’s right and what’s wrong,” she said.
Despite the relaxed tone of the conversation, Claudia Raia’s statement in Globo’s morning attraction was not well received by many users on social networks. Several people on Twitter criticized the actress’s use of the word “retarded”, considering it offensive to those diagnosed with a special intellectual condition, and regretted her choice of expression.
“It hurts me so much when people use it without knowing it’s wrong. I’ve already gotten into arguments about it. It’s such a heavy word, so offensive”, pointed out one of the critics.
