Even though these two cities are undeniably beautiful, there is much more to explore
When you think of Portugal’s cities, especially when you don’t know it as a destination, it’s hard to see anything but Lisbon and Porto.
However, there is one important thing to remember whenever you visit one of these places: they are quite small. Many times they have been described as tiny, always compared to the other places you have visited. You can travel from one side to the other in the afternoon as the sun sets.
Let’s see which are the 5 cities in Portugal that are full of wonderful buildings and endless history:
-
Braga

A city that marries the old with the new. Braga is the right city to visit if you are tired of Lisbon and Porto. It is one of the historical cities, with attractions in its center that refer somewhere to the Roman era.
Even if the history is a major reason to visit, it’s a pretty lively area because of the university. In the row you will find bars and restaurants.
It’s perfect for sightseeing in the morning and eating and drinking in the evening. Only an hour away from Porto and about €6.20 to go there and also to return.
-
Funchal

Capital of the Madeira archipelago, Funchal is perhaps one of the strangest cities on the list. Even if it’s a fixed destination on a package holiday, there’s plenty to do if you’re young and looking for adventure.
Its harbor and marina make it an ideal place for a stroll. On your way you come across various cafes and restaurants where you can sit. While you are walking, keep in mind the street art on the doors of the buildings.
-
Coimbra

There you will find the oldest university in Portugal. Student life has been an important part of the area for centuries. However, it is not only a wonderful city to walk around. Its historic buildings scattered around built on a hillside are reflected down in the Mondego River, making it a uniquely beautiful place.
You can visit the University of Coimbra to see the incredible heritage of the city as well as the tower which is built on the highest point of the city. It is located between Lisbon and Porto, so it is the perfect place for a stopover.
-
Guimaraes

Walking through the streets of Guimaraes, it’s like being in a fairy tale. This was the city that gave birth to Portugal and was its capital for a short time. It was also where its first king, Don Afonso Henriques, was born.

Evora

Protected city by UNESCO WORLD since 1986. The old city of Evra is the jewel of the area. You will find there the Temple of Artemis and various Roman arenas. The city has also been the seat of the kings of Portugal since the 15th century, and has not lost its grandeur since then.
Évora is one of the capital cities of Alentejo, one of the unexplored regions of Portugal. Filled with vines, full of empty lands and an extremely laid back lifestyle. Rent a car and definitely make a stop in Evora and get ready to try the rich cuisine of the region.
