The property in Manhattan where they lived and worked Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat the actress will take over Angelina Jolie. The deal for the property, located at 57 Great Jones Street, has been confirmed by directors of estate agency Meridian Capital Group. Jolie will rent the space for her latest creative venture, Atelier Jolie, for eight years.

It’s a three-story building, the exterior of which is decorated with street art, which the actress will maintain, as a tribute to Basquiat, who began his career as one half of the graffiti art duo SAMO.

Basquiat rented the second floor space from Warhol shortly after they first met. Warhol bought the building in 1970.

Before Warhol’s purchase, the property already had a rich history. Built in the 1860s, it was bought by Paolo Antonio Vaccarelli – aka gangster Paul Kelly – who opened the Brighton Athletic Club there in 1904. The building was then used as a metalwork and kitchen manufacturing business until 1970. More recently, the property housed the Japanese restaurant Bohemian.

Atelier Jolie, according to Artnews, will serve as a workshop for tailors and artisans who are underrepresented around the world. Those who participate will be able to work and present their creations there. Jolie plans to open her new business “as soon as possible.”
