How Madonna accumulated a fortune of R$ 4 billion after arriving in New York with US$ 35 in her pocket

In the hospital in early June, while recovering from a generalized infection, Madonna established the division of her fortune, valued at US$ 850 million (about R$ 4 billion). She also allegedly established an equal share among her six children and allotted a portion to her longtime manager, Guy Oseary.

But, until she managed to become the material girl with such assets, the singer had to work hard. She has already claimed that she left her native Michigan and arrived in New York, aged 20, in 1978 with $35 in her pocket. His early professional life was by no means glamorous. One of her first jobs was at a donut shop in town, an occupation that didn’t last long.

In an interview with journalist Howard Stern in 2015, she stated that she worked at the bakery for just one week. “I didn’t take the job very seriously and I was playing with the jam maker,” she said.

Madonna managed to save enough money to pay for ballet and modern dance college and started performing in bars and nightclubs with The Breakfast Club. One of her first songs, “Everybody”, was recorded on a cassette, given to a DJ. Madonna convinced him to play it and in a short time it was a hit in New York ballads.

The way was open for her first album, “Madonna”, released in 1983. In two weeks, it reached the 8th place on the Billboard list. In the following years, she released the albums “Like a Virgin” (1984), “True Blue” (1986) and “Like a Prayer” (1989).

Her second album reached the top of the charts in Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom, and also became the first album by a woman to sell more than five million copies in the United States.

In the meantime, in the midst of recordings and releases, the artist also kicked off acting, when she was the protagonist of the film “Susan Desperately Seeking” (1985). For this work she received US$ 80 thousand dollars. In 1996, she accepted an invitation to play Eva Perón in the film “Evita”, infuriating fanatical Peronists, who associated the singer’s sensual and libertarian image with the “mother of the poor”, the almost sanctified first lady, who died of cancer at her 33 years.

Madonna also became an entrepreneur by launching her own entertainment company, Maverick. The project was launched in 1982, in partnership with Warner, and, as an advance, she received US$ 60 million – at the time, one of the largest contracts offered to an artist. In 1991, the Queen of Pop released the documentary “In Bed With Madonna”, with a worldwide box office estimated at US$ 29 million.

His role in the production “Corpo em Evidência” (1993) was one of the highest fees he has ever received in films. According to the Daily Mail, Madonna earned $2.5 million. In addition to being an actress, she has also worked as an executive producer, as in the production “Sujos e Sábios” (2008).

His 13th studio album, “Rebel Heart” (2015), was the biggest seller in two decades.
