In February 1988 on the show “BBC’s That’s Life!» a man named Nicholas Winton he came face to face with some of the 669 children of Jewish families he had saved from the Nazis before World War II.

A surprise reunion brought to light the remarkable story that has now been turned into a Hollywood movie. The protagonist will be Sir Anthony Hopkins, as the Holocaust hero named “British Schindler».

The film titled “One Life” will tell how Sir Nicholas Winton, a stockbroker in London who was knighted for his humanitarian achievements in 2003, helped young Jewish refugees escape from occupied Czechoslovakia in 1938.

The Kindertransport was a program to rescue minors from Nazi-controlled territories.

About 10,000 childrenthe majority of whom were Jews, were sent to Great Britain from November 1938 to September 1939.

Sir Nicholas Winton persuaded the British government to allow Czech children, as well as German and Austrian children, to enter the UK.

Parents were not allowed to accompany the children in what was supposed to be a temporary move until it was safe for them to return home.

Together with a few volunteers – including his mother – Nicholas Winton arranged everything the children needed, including finding host families and raising funds to cover the costs of the trip.

The last train was scheduled to depart on September 1, 1939, but was canceled when war broke out.

Some 50 years later, Sir Nicholas Winton’s wife discovered a scrapbook in their attic detailing everything her husband had done, including the names of all the children he had helped escape.

His story went viral and Sir Nicholas was later invited to appear on an episode of the popular program ‘That’s Life!».

Host Esther Rantzen asked the studio audience: “Does anyone here tonight owe their life to Nicholas Wynton?»

Then dozens of people sitting around the then 77-year-old stood up, revealing themselves to be adult versions of those little ones he had saved.

The touching clip available on YouTube has racked up tens of millions of views introducing Sir Nicholas Whinton to a whole new generation, the BBC reports.

The film was based on the book written in 2014 by Sir Nicholas Winton’s daughter Barbara entitled “If It’s Not Impossible… The Life of Sir Nicholas Winton».

The film “One Life” will have its world premiere next month at the Toronto International Film Festival.
