In the presence of the Metropolitan of Nafpaktos and Agios Vlasios Mr. Ierotheos
On the policies of osmosis of cultural heritage with modern creation but also on the connection of culture with the social and economic activity of Nafpaktos, the Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni, inaugurating the exhibition entitled, “Naus + Pignymi” by artist Yiannis Adamakisin Fethiye Mosque, in the presence of the Metropolitan of Nafpaktos and Agios Vlasios Mr. Ierotheos.
In her greeting, Lina Mendoni noted: “It is with special joy that I am, once again, in your historic, beautiful and hospitable city, on the occasion of the opening of the important exhibition of Yiannis Adamakis. Nafpakto, Epachto, Lepanto, whose multiple names testify to its deep journey through time. From here, populations and cultures passed, leaving their mark until Nafpaktia played an active role in the Paleogene. And to establish a solid relationship with letters and arts in the two centuries of our free life. The organization of the exhibition, in Nafpaktos, at Fethiye Mosque, highlights our perception of modern culture. It is our permanent concern that contemporary art does not remain confined to the big urban centers, but that it spreads to every corner of our country, reaching ever larger audiences. A key point of our policies is the connection of culture with the social and economic activity of the region. The exhibition coincides with the tourist season and is addressed not only to the permanent residents, but also to the thousands of visitors to Nafpaktos”.
The exhibition entitled “Naus+Pegnymi” refers to the familiar themes of the painter, in which ships and the sea dominate, as well as to the city of Nafpaktos, which has a multidimensional historical and cultural reserve. For the exhibition in Nafpaktos, the painter created two new works focusing on the two historical events that marked the course of the city: The famous Naval Battle of Nafpaktos or Naval Battle of Lepanto, from its medieval name, on October 7, 1571, one of the most important naval battles, in world history which is a historical milestone in naval tactics but also in shipbuilding. And its liberation from Ottoman rule, on April 18, 1829, which marked the expansion of the borders of the new Greek state, from the Isthmus of Corinth to the Arta-Volos line.
The exhibition of Yiannis Adamakis will last until October 7, 2023, the anniversary of the Battle of Lepanto.
