Emmy-winning actor says he’ll have to sell house because of strikes in Hollywood

by

Three months of strike by Hollywood entertainment industry professionals are already starting to weigh on artists’ pockets. Actor Billy Porter announced that he will sell his house on the island of Long Island, near New York, United States. The Emmy winner for Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series in 2019, for his work on “Pose”, faces serious financial problems.

“I need to sell my house because I still don’t know when we’ll be back to work and the bills keep coming,” he said in an interview with the British newspaper Evening Standard. He continued in the vent: “The life of an artist, until you make some money, which I didn’t get, depends on every check. I should be shooting a movie and I had a show in September. None of them will happen.”

Porter further commented that the house had been purchased by him and his now ex-husband in October 2020 for $1.4 million (R$6.86 million). According to the international press, the property is currently valued at US$ 2.3 million (R$ 11.27 million). Built in 1970, the property has four bedrooms, five bathrooms and other luxurious facilities, and monthly maintenance is high.

Porter also complained about a comment made by an unnamed executive in an interview with Deadline just as the strikes began: “The strategy will be to drag things out until union members start losing their apartments and homes.”

“That person who said ‘let’s make them feel cramped until they have to sell their apartments’. Well here you go, you put me through a hard time,” lamented the actor.

The Screen Actors Guild (SAG-AFTRA – Union of Actors and American Federation of Television Artists, in Portuguese), the association that represents more than 160 thousand audiovisual professionals in the United States, including its main actors and actresses, went on strike in July 17th. The Writers Guild of America (WGA) has been on strike since May 2. It is the first time in 63 years that actors and screenwriters have stopped their activities at the same time.
