Bradley Cooper returns to action as Leonard Bernstein in the movie ‘Maestro’.

The Netflix film marks Cooper’s return to directing after 2018’s Oscar-winning A Star Is Born. Cooper stars as legendary composer Bernstein, and also produced and co-wrote the film with Oscar-winning “Spotlight” screenwriter Josh Singer.

The film, which is not purely biographical, focuses on the lifelong relationship between Leonard Bernstein and Felicia Monteallegre, played by Carey Mulligan. Bernstein married the Costa Rican-born actress and activist in 1951 and they remained together until her death in 1978, even though he had affairs with men and otherwise lived a gay life.

The film is also being produced by Steven Spielberg, who originally planned to direct it before deciding to hand it over to Cooper after seeing the actor’s successful directorial effort on A Star Is Born.

“Maestro” opens in select theaters on November 22nd and will stream on Netflix on December 20th. Cooper’s second directorial effort will premiere at the Venice Film Festival in early September.
