“It was kind of a last-minute casting call,” Serra said
THE Michael Cera (Michael Cera) plays awkward Alan in Greta Gerwig’s blockbuster ‘Barbie’but had it not been for a last-minute Zoom call with the director, Serra might not have made it into the film.
“It was kind of a last minute casting”, Serra said in a video interview with GQ that took place before the actors’ strike. “My manager got a call asking if I was available, and he called me and said, “I got a call for this movie. It’s the Barbie movie. It’s directed by Greta Gerwig and it’s shot in London for four months, so I told them you probably don’t want to do it because you probably don’t want to go to London.”
Serra continued: “I said; “What! Call them back!”. He didn’t like it but said, “I let them know you might not want to do it.” I felt: “How can I not do it? I have to do it!”.
Then Serra took matters into his own hands. “I found Greta’s email address, I think through a mutual friend of ours, and I emailed her saying, ‘Can I be in this? Can I be in the movie?'” Serra said. “And he replied, ‘Let’s talk on Zoom now. Here’s a Zoom link, I’ll be there for the next hour’…And then we talked, and everything happened very quickly from there».
