The United States, the United Kingdom and France were the countries from which most searches were made for Athens as a tourist destination throughout 2021, according to research by the Tourix team. The research is based on the volume of searches collected using 1917 search terms that are directly related to accommodation in Athens.
Considering that the internet is one of the most important tools for travelers who are actively looking for a destination as well as for their stay, it is particularly important how the trends are formed chronologically and by country of origin of the online tourist demand for the area of ​​Athens. , the report points out.
By studying and analyzing the data of the tourist demand through the internet from the beginning of 2020 and for the whole of 2021, useful data are extracted.

In 2021, the ranking of countries that searched the Google platform for accommodation in Athens was as follows:
- USA
- United Kingdom
- France
- Germany
- Italy
- Cyprus
- Israel
- Canada
- Netherlands
- Switzerland
The interest of 10 selected countries based on searches regarding accommodation in Athens from 2019 to 2021 moved as follows:
- The US and the UK remained firmly at the top of the rankings.
- France and Germany appear to be the next most important markets, strengthening their position in 2020 and 2021.
- Immediately next countries that show significant interest are Italy and Cyprus.
- Australia and Spain, which seemed to be strong markets in 2019, 2020 and 2021, are out of the top 10. Switzerland and the Netherlands have taken their place.
Compared to 2020, in 2021 all the above countries showed an overall increased interest, with more intense increases from the USA 59%, Israel 42% and Cyprus 32%. The only exceptions are searches from the UK which fell by 9% and from Canada which fell by 3%.
Chronologically, at the beginning of 2021 there was a decrease in interest (January – April) and most searches came from the USA, followed by the United Kingdom and France. With the lifting of quarantine measures and the beginning of the summer season, searches showed a large increase with the most intense from the US and France. At that time, the US remained at the top of the search and France surpassed the UK which remained more stagnant but also showed a slight increase. After the summer season the searches decreased from almost all the countries selected in the survey.
