On this day, 26 years ago, a fatal car accident took away Lady Diana, everyone’s beloved Princess of Wales. Was she pregnant, did Philip want her dead, or was it the paparazzi’s fault?
On August 31, 1997a tragic news shocked the world community. Lady Diana “gone” at just 36 years old, after a sudden car accident. The sadness that overwhelmed everyone who knew her personally, but also those who had loved her as the “people’s princess”, was great and almost no one believed that the accident was so…sudden.
The Princess of Wales she was born on July 1, 1961 and married Prince Charles, Queen Elizabeth II’s eldest son and first heir to the royal throne, in 1981. Together they had two sons, William and Harry, but their marriage was not exactly successful .
The once smiling Diana, seemed to have lost her old self, in the last years of their marriage. Charles had become very close to Camila again and she was on the sidelines. The divorce did not take long to come and in 1996 she was now free and ready for a new beginning. This beginning was offered to her by the secret relationship with the heart surgeon Hasnat Khan, with whom she had fallen in love, but after a year she herself ended their relationship. Then, she met Dodi Al Fayed and everyone was talking about a love at first sight, which would soon lead to a glamorous marriage.
The night of the fatal car accident
Her happiness did not last long. A car accident in the Pont d’Alma tunnel in Paris ended the life of the sweet and amiable princess on August 31, 1997. On the evening of August 30, Diana and Dodi were at the Ritz Hotel, which was run by Dodi’s father , 0 billionaire Mohamed Al Fayed, in Paris. The paparazzi had surrounded the area and so the young couple with their entourage decided to leave through the second entrance of the hotel.
The glamorous couple, along with driver Henry Paul and bodyguard Rhys Jones, boarded the black Mercedes S28 for its final, fateful ride. They headed towards the Pont d’Alma tunnel, the car speeding as they tried to escape the paparazzi who were following them. A few seconds after they entered, there was a deafening sound, foreshadowing a tragic accident. The driver had lost control and the car slammed into one of the dozens of concrete pillars supporting the tunnel.
Dodi Al Fayed and Henry Paul were killed instantly, while Rhys Jones was injured in the face and knocked unconscious. Diana was still conscious when efforts were made to extricate her so she could be given first aid and taken to hospital. Despite the efforts of doctors to save her, the repeated heart attacks that hit her, made her take her last breath, at 04:00 in the morning.
The first reactions upon hearing the news
Princess Diana was so popular that her funeral was watched on the BBC by 32.10 million people in the UK alone. Millions of people were shocked by the shocking news of her death and the mourning for the lost “people’s princess” was great. The royal family, however, didn’t seem to have the same reaction…
Upon hearing of the tragic accident and Diana’s subsequent death, they reacted with excessive composure, as if nothing had happened. In fact, Queen Elizabeth refused to return from the vacation she was with her two grandsons in Scotland, as she thought that if they returned it would be bad for the psychology of William and Harry.
