The timeless elegance of black and white photography has been praised once again by the Black and White Photo Awards competition.

The winners of this year’s competition have been announced, with selections from nearly 3,000 photos submitted by photographers from 92 countries.

French photographer Patrice Quillard was named this year’s Absolute Winner thanks to his stunning photo ‘My Copyright’.

The portrait of a cow baboon – a species of baboon found only in the highlands of Ethiopia – is striking: the primate looks directly into the camera lens, establishing a link with the photographer and, ultimately, with us viewers.

“Suddenly and for a single moment, he turned to me, looked at me intensely, and I understood the full force of his dominance over his herd,” says Quillard, recalling the moment their eyes met. “For me, it was an unforgettable moment, exactly what I was trying to capture through a photograph”

There were also winners in five categories: Street, Landscape, Flora and Fauna, Architecture and Portrait.

In addition, a photographer was singled out for her creativity; with her photo “Painted Portrait”, Ágnes Dudás took home the Special Prize for Creativity.
