What we liked and what we didn’t like about this certainly interesting production
Are you also tired of searching for hours on Netflix recommendations? Has the sudden change in weather whetted your appetite for a chilling crime thriller? I too found myself in one of these long hours of exploration, until a series caught my attention. The Taiwanese Copycat Killerwhich is an adaptation of the book “Copycat” by Miyuki Miyabeis a new and promising addition to the quiver of the steaming platform.
A few words about the case
We are in 1997 Taipei, which is faced with the first serial killer case in Taiwan’s history. An assassin, calling himself Noh (Chinese for talent), kidnaps young girls and kills them, after first subjecting them to unimaginable and sick torture. Noh, meanwhile, terrorizes the public by invading the city’s television frequencies wearing a black suit and a porcelain mask. Guo Hsiao-chi, the central prosecutor and protagonist of the series, also having his own dark past, devotes himself to the case and develops his personal vendetta against the murderer. The series develops into a twisted manhunt full of unexpected losses, twists and sick games.
It reminds a bit of Mindhunter, clearly influenced by Seven – the authority in this genre – but moves in more mainstream contexts. What do I mean mainstream? The known: A killer who chooses young women as his victims, subjects them to hideous torture, and finally kills them in even more disgusting ways, provoking and taunting, in the climax, their families. Women, of course, to prove the power he can exert on the “weaker” sex. A bit predictable.
