The Colombian superstar Shakira made history at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards by becoming the first artist of South American descent to be honored with the prestigious ‘Michael Jackson Video Vanguard’.

According to “E! News” wearing a golden gown by Versace, the star arrived at the famous Prudential Center in New Jersey with her two sons.

“I couldn’t believe it,” the star told reporters on the red carpet. “It’s such an important award….I’m thrilled to be here.”

Shortly before the award, Shakira took to the stage of the MTV awards after 17 years and performed for 10 minutes the famous hits, reports Variety.

In her speech after thanking MTV which has been part of her career since she was 18 and Sony Music, she referred to her collaborators in the creation of music videos Jaume de Laiguana and Maite Marcos, whom she called friends and collaborators. “Really, I don’t know what I would do without you,” she said in Spanish and continued.

“I want to thank my parents and my children, Milan and Sasha, for being here. “Thank you so much for cheering me up and making me feel like mommy can do anything,” Shakira noted. “I especially want to share this award with my fans who always support me through thick and thin. Thank you so much for being my allies and helping me fight all my battles,” he said before adding in Spanish: “This is for you, my people…thank you for inspiring me and giving me so much strength and so much will to continue”.
