Painting by Artemisia Gentileschi which was stored at Hampton Court Palace in England for over 100 years eit is now housed in Windsor Castle after extensive restoration.

The play “Susanna and the Elders” by Artemisia Gentileskiconsidered one of the greatest painters of her generation depicts the biblical story of Sossana, who was falsely accused of infidelity.

The Italian painter rose to fame despite the ordeal of a seven-month trial because she was raped as a teenager and even tortured to verify her claim that she was assaulted, according to court documents.

The painting is one of many that were lost after being sold and scattered across Europe after the execution of Charles I.

The painting is an important addition to Artemisia’s extant work and sheds new light on the creative process and the years she spent in London in the late 1630s working with her father at the court of Charles I and Henrietta Maria.

Active in cities throughout Italy and wider Europe in the early 1600s, Artemisia Gentileschi painted portraits for some of the highest echelons of society, including King Charles I and King Philip IV of Spain.

The painting, which is part of the Royal Collection of the United Kingdom, is on display at Windsor Castle until April 29, 2024.
