French actor Gérard Depardieu, investigated since 2020 for rape and sexual assault against an actress, repudiated, this Sunday (1st), the accusations against him and denounced a “lynching” carried out by a “media court”.
“I can no longer consent to what I have heard and read about me in recent months. I thought I didn’t care, but I don’t. Everything is affecting me,” wrote the 74-year-old actor in an open letter published in the newspaper Le Figaro.
The text, in the tone of a poem, is the French film star’s first reaction since 13 new testimonies against him came to light in April, published by the investigative vehicle Mediapart. In it, the actor emphasizes that he is “neither a rapist nor a predator” and denounces the “lynching” of a “media court”.
“I have never abused a woman,” says Depardieu in the text, in which he alludes, without naming, to Charlotte Arnould, the actress who reported him for two rapes in 2018. “A woman came to my house for the first time, with a hurried step. , and went up to my room of her own free will. Now she says she was raped.”
“Among us there was never any coercion, violence, or protests,” says the actor. “If she was possessed by something, it was herself, not me.”
Depardieu was indicted on December 16, 2020 for “rapes” and “sexual assaults”, following a complaint of two rapes, made by the actress in August 2018.
