Marilyn Monroe was said to sleep wearing a few drops of Chanel No.5, while Andy Warhol loved the scent.

But now we have learned that Queen Elizabeth was also a fan of this famous perfume.

In the exhibition “Gabrielle Chanel. Fashion Manifesto” at the V&A museum, we discovered a letter written by Queen Elizabeth in April 1955 to her husband Prince Philip’s then chief of staff, Frederick Arthur Montague Browning.

In this letter, the Queen thanked Browning for the gift he gave her, a bottle of Chanel No.5.

The young Elizabeth, who had ascended the throne only three years before, wrote in her letter, “As always, you have discovered exactly what I wanted and I want to thank you very much for the Chanel perfume you are giving me as a birthday present. I’m already using it and hope to smell better! It is kind of you to think this way. Again, thank you.”

Besides the unsurpassed Chanel No.5, Queen Elizabeth’s favorite perfume was also Guerlain’s L’Heure Bleue.

On May 5, 1921, Coco Chanel first introduced Chanel No.5 to the public through her boutique on Rue Cambon in Paris. This date marked the beginning of a new era in perfumery and although centuries have passed, Chanel No.5 remains one of the most famous and beloved perfumes around the world.

Today, it is estimated that a bottle of Chanel No.5 is sold every 30 seconds, demonstrating its continued popularity.
