Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau used social media to pay tribute to Matthew Perry, who died this Saturday (28), aged 54, a victim of drowning in his home. “I will never forget the games we used to play in the school yard and I know that people around the world will never forget the joy you brought them. Thank you for the laughs, you were loved and greatly missed,” the prime minister wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
Perry was born in Massachusetts and raised in Ottawa, Canada. The actor, who played the character Chandler in “Friends”, attended elementary school with Trudeau. His mother was press advisor to the current prime minister’s father, who held the position at the time. Matthew moved to California as a teenager to pursue a career in acting.
In 2017, Perry was on the American talk show hosted by Jimmy Kimmel and said that he and Trudeau were colleagues, but their relationship wasn’t that good. The actor was around ten years old, and was two grades ahead of Trudeau. “I beat him up,” he said, adding that he wasn’t proud of that story. He revealed that, together with a friend, he beat the now Canadian Prime Minister out of envy of his sporting skills. “It was pure envy,” he admits. See an excerpt from the interview:
