The great wealth of this man was his films, his ethos, his stories, his imagination, his friendships
The favorite actor Spyros Fokas he is no longer with us. He passed away at the age of 86. An actor who left his own “mark” in the field of acting. Unfortunately, the news of his death was made known by his wife, Lillian Fokawith a post on her personal Facebook account.
Spyros Fokas was one of the most important Greek actors, with over fifty films to his credit in Rome and Hollywood.
His artistic path and international career in countries where top directors flourished, such as Luchino Visconti, Franco Rossi, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Lewis Teague, with his co-starring famous actors, such as Michael Douglas, Catherine Deneuve, Kathleen Turner, Danny de Vito, Claudia Cardinale, Jeanne Moreau, Renato Salvatori, films and plays that left an era, highlight his unique talent and his value. Undoubtedly, Spyros Fokas was a true “lover” of Art. His eyes – if you had the chance to meet him – reflected wisdom and knowledge of the unnecessary and the simple.
Great actor, creator, member of the Academy of Oscars, restless, lion in heart and courage marched forward even when times – and people – were against him.
Spyros Fokas was and remained an anarchist until his death! He was conscious of his anarchy from childhood and as an adult. And this scent of anarchy was exhaling in his life. He had four marriages, while his last wife, the actress Lilian Panagiotopoulou, he fell in love with on the stage.
The great wealth of this man was his films, his ethos, his stories, his imagination, his friendships. Of money, he spent almost all of it. Money was never a value for him, let alone a first value.
Spyros Fokas and his brother, Dionysis, were born and spent the first years of their lives in Patras. Their father, Michalis, was a travel agent, a very active man who could accomplish anything. Their mother, Mrs Vasiliki, was a “Saint”, as the actor himself has said.
When he turns 9, the Fokas family moves to Athens. Spyros gets lost in movie theaters, he watched five movies a day, as if he felt that acting is the only way for him. Before even attending Michaelidis’ school, an actor of the time and a friend of his father introduced him to the director Andreas Lambrinos, who chose him for the lead role in the film “Bloody Sunset”. This was the beginning, the dream come true.
A few months later returning from Cannes, where he had been for his first film, he stops in Italy. “I went to see a friend of mine, who worked as an agent, and that’s how I got the lead role in a Pasolini film… In life, everything is written,” he had said.
Spyros Fokas will shoot over 45 films in Italy. A few years later, at the end of the 80s, he will go abroad again, this time to Hollywood. There he will shine on the road of “The Diamond of the Nile”, a film that will make the Father Zen premiere co-star of Catherine Deneuve, friend of Michael Douglas and object of desire of an entire universe. He will stay in Hollywood for ten years, make several films, make money and be at the height of his glory. However, this great actor always had a return to his homeland at the back of his mind. And he did…
