About the history of the Onassis Awards:
The Onassis Awards were born from Aristotle Onassis himself, who had set them as a goal in his handwritten will. Starting in 1978, the institution has gone through three distinct phases focusing first on personalities and organizations with an international reach in the fields of culture, social contribution and the environment, and then on the production of original works of theatre, dance, music composition and visual arts. In these phases the institution awarded important figures from around the world, including the first president of the European Parliament Simone Veil, the former president of the French Republic Valéry Giscard d’Estaing, Elizabeth Taylor and Ekaterini Goulandris, president of the N. PI. Goulandris – Museum of Cycladic Art.
In 2007, the Onassis Awards entered the new phase of the institution, acquiring the structure they follow to this day. Specifically, from 2009 onwards, the Awards focus on highlighting academic personalities who specialize in the field of Shipping, International Trade and Finance, areas in which the founder of the institution, Aristotle Onassis, also distinguished himself. The list of winners of the newest phase of the awards includes scientists such as Eugene Fama, who after being awarded the Onassis Finance Prize in 2009, received in 2013 the highest honor of the Nobel Prize in Economics.
The previous edition of the awards was in 2018, with winners including Professor Douglas W. Diamond (Finance), Professor Jonathan Eaton and Professor Samuel S. Kortum (International Trade – part-time), Professor Mary R. Brooks and Professor Wayne K. Talley (Maritime – part-time).
Although there is no obligation to spend the prize, winners of past years have donated part of this money to finance student studies, as in the case of Dr. Mary R. Brooks Bachelor of Commerce Award at Dalhousie University, Canada.
