As part of the actions for this year’s Black Awareness Day, the city of São Paulo opened a public consultation to choose five new personalities who will be honored with sculptures throughout the city.
Elza Soares, Mussum, Ruth de Souza, actor Grande Otelo and geographer Milton Santos are some of the names nominated by the Municipal Department of Culture. Voting runs until November 25th, through the Participe+ platform.
The list also has the names of Ialorixá Mãe Sylvia de Oxalá, Laudelina de Campos Melo, a pioneer in the fight for the rights of domestic workers in Brazil, Dandara and Tereza de Benguela, symbols of resistance against the slavery regime in Brazil, Iracema de Almeida, doctor pioneer, Lélia Gonzalez, philosopher and activist, Irmãos Rebouças, the first black people to attend university, Abdias Nascimento, playwright nominated for the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize and Chaguinhas, a corporal sentenced to death who inspired the name Liberdade for the neighborhood.
Aline Torres, secretary of the department, states that the statues will not only serve as a tribute, but as a way of bringing a new understanding of the past to honor the future.
“By including statues of black personalities in the city’s heritage, the objective is not only to honor these people who had great relevance in building the city and strengthening the black community.”
