The fact that the last two years have been difficult is now a common secret. Loneliness, doubt and fear are just a few of the feelings born of the pandemic and quarantine.
In these difficult and unpredictable conditions it was observed in many people the phenomenon of emotional deregulation.
But what is emotional deregulation?
This is the phenomenon that is observed when the world and the developments around it move and change so fast, that our emotions often find it difficult to “follow”. As a result, many people are faced with a vortex of complex and different emotions at the same time, which they are unable to manage and keep under control.
It is also common for these emotions to activate at the wrong time or last longer than usual. It is now becoming clear that due to the rapid development of our society, over time we will become more and more familiar with emotional deregulation. However, there are ways to manage our emotions and ease the mental burden.
A study on emotional deregulation published in the academic journal Canadian Psychology offers helpful tips for processing and controlling our emotions:
Give your emotions some time
Find a place where you feel comfortable and safe and spend some time with yourself to manage to accept new emotions. • Observe the changes or consequences that this feeling brings to your body (For example, palpitations, stomach cramps, etc.).
Try to name the emotion that surrounds you
Try to understand if the emotion is the result of a situation you are experiencing or comes from some other cause.
1. If you conclude that the emotion is the result of a situation you are experiencing, ask yourself what that emotion is trying to tell you and what your next steps should be in order to deal with it effectively.
2. If the feeling seems unjustified, try to redefine the situation in which you react or think about what you would say to a friend if he was in a similar position.
Dealing with our emotions is certainly not an easy task, however their proper management is a prerequisite for ensuring our mental health.
