Out comes the Star Trek cosplays and in comes the paquitas toy soldier hats. This Thursday (30), presenter Xuxa, 60, opened the official program of CCXP 2023, in São Paulo, receiving a tribute for her contribution to the construction and consolidation of Brazilian pop culture.
Used to big international stars, the audience wasn’t packed like most of the places the presenter usually goes to. The screams were also less hysterical than at an exclusive meeting of her fans, but it cannot be said that Xuxa was received coldly.
Especially because the “Queen of Fucking Shorts” (as she was introduced) was loose like she’s rarely seen. Without filters, she replayed key moments of her life and career on stage (such as Michael Jackson’s marriage proposal, who she said was “half boy and half girl”), agreed to revive classic jokes from the former Xou da Xuxa and apologized for traumas that may have caused children in the 1980s and 1990s.
Wearing a jacket with a cut-out back and using the microphone with a face and furry face with which she presented the program that ran from 1986 to 1992, she said she felt important for receiving the tribute that had already been given in previous years to Fernanda Montenegro, Renato Aragão and Fernando Meirelles, among others. She also said that she has no problems dealing with the title by which she became embedded in the Brazilian popular imagination. “I don’t want to give up the title of Queen of Shorties, I always want to be remembered like this,” she said.
Making a nod to the nostalgia of those present, she began the chorus “let’s go with you” for the audience to complete. She also sang the entire “Abecedário da Xuxa” choir and was moved by a performance by “new paquitas”, including black women, plus size women and a young woman in a wheelchair.
Afterwards, it was agreed that some of those present would go up to the stage for a musical chair dance, a game that was always present in their attractions. After the public’s disappointment with the victory of the “boys’ team”, a gaffe.
“You’re not representing the boys, are you?”, she asked the winner, who she believed was part of the LGBTQIA+ community. As the audience laughed, she added: “I’m sorry, it was just a little question, just a little question…”
The joke was also a way for her to remember some of the memes that went viral with her image on the internet, including the catchphrase “sit down, Cláudia”. “I had no filter, I was very crazy”, she admitted, remembering the time she said that a chubby girl who lost a game had “eaten too many fries” and the time she deliberately stepped on a boy who was wearing orthopedic boots.
She offered a mea culpa: “I apologize to the children who grew up with these traumas.” Even with people with disabilities, a cause she has defended very hard over the years, she admitted that she did not always have the best attitude. “I said a lot wrong and I learned,” she commented.
Without mentioning the name of her former director and manager, Xuxa said she was surprised by many things she discovered in the documentary series about her life, which premiered this year on Globoplay. “In reality, I realized that I was very naive and at times even stupid”, she lamented. “You know, leaving my life and my career in someone else’s hands, right?”
“I even ask this to everyone listening, whoever it is, we really can’t leave our happiness, our life, in someone’s hands, be it a boyfriend, a husband, a father, a mother”, he continued . “I thought like this: ‘I’m an artist, an artist can’t keep wanting to know about numbers, about everything’. And then, I left it up to people. And it’s not like that.”
Among her career news, she confirmed the tour she intends to do in 2024 with songs from her classic repertoire. According to her, it will be a farewell to Nave da Xuxa, which will then be retired and will no longer fly. She also spoke excitedly about the documentary about the paquitas and the fictional series about her life, which are also being produced by Globoplay and should also arrive next year.
