The most dramatic role of his career will be played by Dwayne Johnson in the directorial debut of the American screenwriter, actor and editor Benny Safdie.

According to “A24”, which has taken over the financing of the film, the star will star in “The Smashing Machine” as the legendary MMA and UFC champion, Mark Kerr.

The film will tell his no-holds-barred story, including his “struggles with addiction, victory, love and friendship,” Deadline reports.

It is noted that Johnson started out as a wrestler wanting to continue his family’s tradition until Hollywood won him over.

“Dwayne and Benny are unique talents and their shared vision of Mark’s inspiring story is electrifying. We are honored to have their trust as partners in the realization of this incredibly special project,” said Head of Production and Acquisitions Noah Sacco.

Mark Kerr was an MMA athlete and a two-time UFC champion. In 2003, his life was chronicled in the HBO documentary, also titled “The Smashing Machine,” which detailed his MMA career as well as his addiction to painkillers.

Benny Safdie is writing the script with his brother Josh and part of the production, while Johnson and Dany Garcia’s Seven Bucks label will follow along with Eli Bush and David Koplan ).
