Celebrities and politicians mourned the death of singer Carlos Lyra, aged 90, on social media this Saturday (16).
Musician Gilberto Gil paid tribute to the “extraordinary legacy” of the composer of bossa nova classics. “Saddened by the news of Carlos Lyra’s departure, who leaves us at the age of 90 with an extraordinary legacy. A big hug to all his family and friends”, wrote the Bahian on the social network X (formerly Twitter).
The mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Eduardo Paes (PSD) said that Lyra was fundamental in the construction of Rio de Janeiro and Brazilian identity. “What a loss for Brazilian culture. The composer and singer Carlos Lyra passed away today. His legacy is immense and his bossa nova compositions marked several generations around the world.”
Federal deputies Erika Kokay (PT-DF) and Jandira Feghali (PC do B-RJ) also mourned the death. “He was one of our great artists and an icon of bossa nova. Owner of unforgettable melodies such as ‘Você e Eu’ and ‘Influence do Jazz”‘ he also lent his talent to the political struggle, being the author of the @uneoficial anthem [União Nacional dos Estudantes]. Leaves a great work!”, stated the PT member.
Feghali said the country was “born less musical” this Saturday. “Carlos Lyra left us this morning. The composer was one of the creators of Bossa Nova and an enthusiast and promoter of artists such as Cartola, Nelson Cavaquinho and Zé Kéti. He wrote music for theater and cinema and applied social awareness to several of his songs.”
