The Minister of Human Rights commented on the death of a 22-year-old girl after her name was involved in exchanges of messages that went viral on digital platforms.
Silvio Almeida stated that the regulation of social networks is necessary for political reasons and as an instrument to strengthen democracy. “The irresponsibility of the companies that govern social networks in the face of content that other irresponsible people and even criminals (some involved in institutional politics) propagate on it has destroyed families and made a minimally healthy social life impossible.”
Jessica Vitoria Canedo died last Friday (22) after celebrity profiles reflected exchanges of messages, which were believed to be false, between her and comedian Whindersson Nunes. After going viral, the young woman stated that she never spoke to the influencer and asked them not to attack her anymore.
“Stop pouring so much hate. You are talking about my appearance, social class, cursing my family, calling me a gold digger. My only request is that you stop and think about what you are doing,” he wrote in a statement. “These conversations may be true, but I wasn’t the one talking to him.” Inês de Oliveira, Jessica’s mother, said that she suffered from depression and also asked them to stop sharing the content.
Whindersson also denied the veracity of the conversations and lamented the woman’s death. “I’m extremely sad. I’m back to the day I lost my son. May no one go through the pain of burying a child.”
The case gained more repercussion after the page Choquei, which has almost 7 million followers on Twitter and 21 million on Instagram, replicated the rumor. With the news about the death, the page published a statement in which it said it regretted what happened.
“The Choquei profile clarifies that there was no irregularity in the dissemination of information and that there is no responsibility to be attributed for the acts carried out. We want to emphasize that all publications were made based on data available at the time.”
