Wham!’s ‘Last Christmas’ tops official UK Christmas chart 39 years after release
This year’s UK Christmas number one has proven that good things really do come to those who wait.
The “Last Christmas” by Wham!, is at the top of the official UK Christmas chart, 39 years after its release.
The song, penned by the late George Michael, was released in 1984, but the chart-topping ‘They Know It’s Christmas?’ from Band Aid.
Coincidentally, George Muckle was one of dozens of pop stars who contributed vocals to the Band Aid song, the proceeds of which went to charity.
Fan streams of Last Christmas have reached 13.3 million times in the past seven days, in the race to make it the number one Christmas song of 2023.
The iconic Christmas song beat Sam Ryder’s ‘You’re Christmas to Me’ and Mariah Carey’s ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ to take the top spot.
“Mission accomplished,” said Wham!’s Andrew Ridgeley. “It finally went to Christmas No1, which was always the main goal. George (Michael) would have been mad that after all these years we finally got to the top,” he added.
“He wrote Last Christmas with the intention of it being a Christmas number one. It was a goal he set,” he said.
Ridgeley admitted the disappointment was huge for the pair when they failed to reach the summit that year.
