The artists Giorgos Giatromanolakis, Marina Papadakis, Natalia Papadopoulou and Maros Fasoulis deal with the concept of the in-between space
On January 18, 2024 CITROËNE Gallery presents the Liminality exhibition at its premises in Athens. With this exhibition, the gallery introduces another current problematic.
These are issues that arise from the fluid reality of our days, which overturns traditional ways of being, identity and life – willingly or unwittingly. The transitional stage of the establishment from one condition to another is described on an individual and collective level and the consequent ‘rituals’.
The artists Giorgos Giatromanolakis, Marina Papadakis, Natalia Papadopoulou and Maros Fasoulis deal with the concept of in-between space.
Liminality, Liminality in its Greek version, is a term introduced by the French ethnographer Arnold van Gennep in his book “Rites of Passage” in 1909. It is the middle stage of the tripartite scheme “separation, transition, integration into rituals”. The exhibition repositions this concept in the context of modern experiences, a consequence of global developments. The curator of the exhibition, Vicky Tsirou, expands the meaning of the term and examines its contemporary expressions. As she points out in her editorial text, “the most recent interpretations of the term encompass not only the concept of ritual but also changes in the realm of the social and the political. Today, in the era of ‘liquid modernity’, we observe that the status quo, an entire system of values, is in a condition of continuous instability characterized by successive transitions, or in other words, by a permanent condition of marginality”.
The works in the exhibition trace ‘Limitedness’ through four invisible passages: the architectural structure, the flow of history, the integration of tradition, as well as the inner experiential process. The exhibition does not strictly identify each artist’s work with one theme, but tends to place it on one of these four axes. The works are integrated into the architectural structure of the gallery. They are placed in different rooms in a way that echoes van Gennep’s simile of society with a house and its different rooms. The transitions in the life of individuals and social groups resemble a movement between the interior spaces of the residence.
