The Princess of Wales, Kate Middleton, underwent abdominal surgery at a private hospital in London, Kensington Palace reported on Wednesday (17). The operation, carried out on Tuesday (16) at the London Clinic, was successful, and Middleton will remain in hospital for 10 to 14 days, the palace said.
The palace also said that the 42-year-old princess apologizes for postponing her upcoming engagements. “Based on current medical advice, she is unlikely to return to public duties before Easter,” a statement said.
The palace did not provide further details about Middleton’s treatment, but said the princess’ condition does not involve cancer. However, it appears to be significant enough to keep her in the hospital for up to two weeks, and her recovery is expected to take two to three months.
The London Clinic, in central London, describes itself as the UK’s largest independent private hospital.
From the length of time Middleton is expected to remain in hospital and the tone of the statement issued by the palace, it is clear that her condition is serious. Many minor conditions can be treated and the patient sent home soon after.
The princess had a busy schedule in December, and there were no signs that she was unwell during public appearances. Her husband, the Prince of Wales —first in line to the British throne— will also postpone some of her commitments. William will not perform any official duties while the princess is in hospital.
After being discharged, she is expected to recover at home in Windsor, where the couple and their children, Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, 8, and Prince Louis, 5, now reside.
In the statement, Kensington Palace added that the princess is aware of the interest her surgery will generate and hopes the public “understands her desire to maintain as much normality as possible for her children.”
Kensington Palace has indicated that it will only provide updates when there is significant new information to share.
