The open call of Smashing Pumpkins for a young guitarist it was a huge success. In an announcement on social media, the three members of the American alternative rock band Billy Corgan, James Iha, Jimmy Chamberlin announced that they had received more than 10,000 applications.

“The band has received over 10,000 applications for the position of second guitarist,” Smashing Pumpkins wrote. “Currently, there are eight people working full-time to evaluate each one” stated in the announcement.

The current Smashing Pumpkins lineup includes Corgan on vocals/guitar, Icha on guitar, and Chamberlin on drums, along with touring bassist Jack Bates and multi-instrumentalist Kate Cole.

Last October Jeff Schroeder, the group’s longtime guitarist, announced that he was leaving after 15 years. “I decided to leave the band to explore a slightly different path” he wrote then.

Whoever the Pumpkins pick will have to learn quickly. This summer, the band will join Weezer on a UK and Ireland tour and then join Green Day on ‘The Saviors Tour’.
