A rare copy of his first issue “The Amazing Spider-Man” sold for over a million dollars. The comic, released in March 1963, fetched a record $1.38 million at auction.

It is one of only two copies of The Amazing Spider-Man No. 1 to be graded in “near mint condition” by the Certified Guaranty Company (CGC) comic grading service.

“It was obvious that this Spider-Man issue was a bargain, and the final price reflected that” said Barry Sandoval, vice president of Heritage Auctions, the company that organized the auction, according to Fine Books magazine.

The copy sold for nearly three times as much as a “near mint” version that sold last July for $520,380 (£410,184).

Peter Parker and his Spider-Man alter ego, created by artist Steve Ditko and writer Stan Lee, were first introduced in an August 1962 issue of the Marvel-published Amazing Fantasy anthology series. Since “The Amazing Spider-Man” series launched a few months later, more than 900 issues have been published by 2022.
