Francis Bacon’s 1.9-meter triptych can be sold for $ 47.4-74.5 million at an auction next month by Christie’s in London.
1986-87’s “Triptych1986-7” will debut at auction after three decades in private.
The painting will go on sale at Christie’s 20th Century Contemporary Art Auction in London on March 1.
Two of the three sections in the table each show a single figure. In the first, there is a man wearing a gray suit and hat-shaped figure who refers to images in the press of US President Woodrow Wilson after the signing of the Treaty of Versailles in 1919.
The second figure represents Francis Bacon’s then-partner, John Edwards, whose naked body looks abstract.
The third canvas depicts a sheet of paper that appears to be stained with blood and is linked to the assassination of L. Trotsky in 1940.
“The rare, large-scale triptych gave Bacon the opportunity to watch his life through the historical events of the 20th century,” said Kathryn Arnold, Christie’s Head of Post-War and Contemporary Art in Europe.
The Irish-born British artist painted the work while living in England and is one of 28 large-scale triptychs he has created throughout his career.
The anonymous seller bought the work in 2007 from the Marlborough Gallery in New York, where it was first presented in 1988.
The work was last exhibited in an exhibition at the Pompidou Center dedicated to Francis Bacon in 2020.
