Singer Lorena Alexandre, who presented herself as the “official cover of Marília Mendonça”, used social media to announce the abandonment of the title in honor of the Queen of Suffering. She made the decision after criticism from Ruth Moreira and João Gustavo, respectively the mother and brother of the country girl, who died in a plane crash in November 2021.
“I’m Lorena Alexandre, a singer for 18 years. Out of respect for the memory, all the work and the legacy left by Marília Mendonça, who has always been openly against hate spread on the internet, aggressors, people focused on intrigue, I will be unlinking the term ‘official cover’ of my social networks and work material”, began Lorena in the statement.
She recalled that she had been covering Marília Mendonça since 2019 and that the singer herself even liked her work on the internet. “I have always respected her as a person and her works, I avoided controversies and intrigues, I tried to preserve as much as possible and with the greatest respect the name and legacy of Marília Dias Mendonça. Always defending, supporting and positioning myself in favor of her art”, stated Lorena. She denied that she was taking advantage of her image as a performer in “Whose Blame”. “Opportunism is not my nature.”
Lorena did not comment on being called “ridiculous” by Marília’s mother after her recent participation in a TV program nor about João’s mockery on X (formerly Twitter) regarding her title: “I’m an official cover of Caio Castro.”
Finally, she concluded: “To avoid further stress, controversy, intrigue and things that I believe in my heart that Marília would disapprove of, I prefer to take a peaceful stance and publicize my decision in respect for the legacy of the Queen of Suffering. My conscience is clear. I, my fans, friends, colleagues, admirers and family know that I have always done it out of love and dedication.”
