The minister noted that “the cave of Petralona is a very important archaeological site, a prominent monument of nature and in any case is an important tourist destination” where together with the Museum of Polygyros invests in Chalcidice.
Referring to the works of the cave, the minister said that they serve both the protection of the natural monument itself and infrastructure of accessibility to it for the disabled and people of a certain age who want to become a community and share this cultural asset.
Ms. Mendoni regarding the projects “Promotion of the Petralona Cave and the upgrading of its infrastructure” said that in July 2019, when we took over the ministry, we found that the accompanying studies provided for in the approved study of 2012 had not been approved. the international tender for the supply and installation of metal components and the regular tender for the supply and installation of electrical equipment. At the same time, during the implementation of the project, the need arose for the elaboration and approval of additional supplementary studies. That is why we amended the Act and from 996,000 euros the budget was increased to 1,053,800 euros. At the same time, an extension was given to the implementation time until December 31, 2022. Also, in the modification that was made, another project was added, the supply of material for cleaning stone decoration, deodorization and microbicide of the Cave, budget 100,000 euros. Today the project is in full swing. The services are fully in line with the schedule. Therefore, for this project we have no worries that it will be completed at the end of this year. At the same time, the upgrade for the re-exhibition of the museum’s collections has been included with a budget of 529,000 euros and here the procedures are progressing satisfactorily.
