Environmental activist, Leonardo DiCaprio highlights his concern for forests and indigenous peoples whenever he can. In a publication made this Monday (5), on his Instagram profile, the actor reinforced the importance of preserving indigenous lands in Brazil and highlighted the samba of the Salgueiro samba school. The school will present the theme in defense of the Yanomami in SapucaĆ at Carnival 2024 in Rio (the third on Sunday 11).
“The rhythm of samba pulses to help protect the largest indigenous group in the Amazon that lives in relative isolation – the Yanomami people”, begins the text of the protagonist of “Titanic”. “For years, the Yanomami people have suffered brutal violence from miners and their financiers. Illegal mining has contaminated their waters and led to a humanitarian crisis of malnutrition, malaria, pneumonia and other diseases that have increased infant mortality rates,” continued DiCaprio.
The video with several images of the Amazon has the audio of Salgueiro’s samba. The plot also pays tribute to indigenous man Bruno Pereira and British journalist Dom Phillips, who died in 2022, in Vale do Javari, located in the municipalities of Atalaia do Norte and GuajarĆ”, in the west of the state of Amazonas.
Leonardo, who is the protagonist of the film “Assassins of the Flower Moon”, by director Martin Scorsese about the relationship between Ernest Burkhart and Mollie Kyle (Lily Gladstone), a white man and an indigenous woman, praised the plot of the Rio samba school.
“In the midst of this tragedy, Brazilians invite the world to come together and celebrate the richness of Yanomami culture and their resilience. Re:wild is a committed supporter of the Yanomami and is excited to participate in this celebration of resilience and indigenous activism directly from the heart of the Amazon rainforest”, he concludes. The NGO (Non-Governmental Organization) Re:wild, was founded by the actor in 2021.
