“Excellent poor quality fictionof lowly content that abounds in history inaccuracies» characterized his turn NETFLIX for Alexander the Greatthe Minister of Culture, Lina Mendoniexcluding at the same time to be set “subject to censorship, or prosecution or prohibition thereof”emphasizing that these constitute “even in authoritarian regimes and in Greece, the freedom of art is guaranteed by the constitution”.

The occasion was topical Question of the president of Niki, Dimitris Naziouwhich characterized “horrendous, unacceptable and unhistorical, full of inaccuracies”the NETFLIX series that airs, stressing that it “falsifies the historical truth about Alexander the Great in order to attract the public’s interest by showing him having an affair with his secret friend, Hephaestion.”

“In the series, a false historical narrative is given to subliminally convey the notion that homosexuality was acceptable in ancient timesan element that has no basis” said Mr. Natsios.

“All the elements of Alexander the Great’s personality are not brought out in the NETFLIX series, which does not serve the historical truth. It is full of historical inaccuracies and shows directorial sloppiness. It seeks easy sensationalism to gain viewers by using malicious commentary as supposed facts. The platform characterizes the series as a documentary with scenes of fiction,” the Minister of Culture pointed out, characteristically, and added: “In essence, it is a fiction of extremely poor quality, of low content that is far removed from the historical events as recorded in the ancient written sources and documented by archaeological research.

But, you will know that the concept of love in antiquity is broad and multidimensional. We cannot interpret either practices or persons who acted 2,300 years ago by our own measures, our own norms and assumptions. Alexander the Great, for 2,300 years, never needed, nor does he need now, the intervention of any unsolicited protector of his historical memory or, even more, of his personality and moral standing.”

Answering the question of Mr. Natsios about what meters intends to take against the platformMs. Mendoni made it clear that the “Ministry of Culture does not exercise censorship, does not carry out actions that result in its prosecution or prohibition, does not manipulate, does not limit, does not control the dissemination of information and ideas neither preventively nor repressively”.

“Censorship catalyzes creation by raising questions of content and substance. Censorship is inherent in authoritarian regimes. In Greece, freedom of art is enshrined in the constitution of 1825. Since then, all revisions have enshrined freedom of expression. In addition, at the international level – and Greece is not a country that does not look around – freedom of expression is absolutely protected” pointed out Mrs. Mendoni.

As he said, “the inspiration of artists, the personal recruitment, the judgment of people cannot obviously be put under regulatory regime and controlcannot be regulated in the courts or dragged into them, but is evaluated and judged by each of us, by the international community”.

“This is also how NETFLIX is evaluated. Almost everything has been written and said about Alexander the Great and about all the leading personalities of world history. It is the size of the personality that throughout time arouses the interest of scientists, the inspiration of artists, the admiration or envy of people and, therefore, the indelible registration of these personalities in the historical memory and in the mythology of humanity” concluded the Minister of Culture.
