Olivia Colman complained about the way women are judged and said that people “they act shocked when they swear”.

The actress spoke ahead of the release of her new film, “Wicked Little Letters”in which she plays one of the many women who are targeted by anonymous and vulgar messages in an English seaside town in the 1920s.

The film is based on true events and the profanity in the letters outraged people at the time.

“Everybody was watching it in the papers. It was shocking. Today, there are still comments about how women should look… If a woman curses, people are suddenly shocked. Women are people – funny, loving, caring, just like men”Olivia Colman reported.

The actress, who recently appeared in the film ‘Wonka’, said that the female characters in the film are treated differently than the men and that has not changed. “Trolling is something they did back then too, but in the form of letters”he added.

The actress, who rose to television fame in series such as ‘Peep Show’ and ‘Broadchurch’, said she is not convinced women are enjoying a new era in the way they are represented on screen. “There have been a lot of fantastic female-centric films that have moved me,” she noted.

“And some of the highest-grossing movies, Barbie, Bridesmaids, Thelma & Louise, have female leads.

People say men get paid more because they bring more viewers to the seats. This is a lie! It can be proven at the box office. I don’t know why we still have to talk about it!”he said meaningfully.

“Wicked Little Letters”, which she also produced, had its European premiere in London on Tuesday. It co-stars Timothy Spall and Jessie Buckley, with whom Colman appeared in 2021’s The Lost Daughter.
