Mel B of the Spice Girls said she thought her career would be over after she released her memoir, in which she revealed she was a victim domestic abuse.

Melanie Brown aka Scary Spice filed for divorce from Hollywood film producer Stephen Belafonte in March 2017 following allegations of abuse which she has repeatedly denied.

In 2018, the West Yorkshire singer published the book Brutally Honest, which detailed her marriage to Belafonte.

Speaking recently on the How To Fail podcast, Brown said: “I thought that publishing this book in 2018 would end my career because to begin with, no one wanted to publish it because the subject (of coercive control) was a big… taboo”.

“We thought talking about it might help someone else. …and they said if it’s for other people, yes I should do it” he emphasized.

“But this book was for me because I didn’t understand what had happened in those 10 years. I knew it wasn’t right. I knew because the bruises were visible and then when I left I was financially abused.”

“And the reason I’ve re-released (the book) with three new chapters is because between 2018 and 2024 a lot has happened,” he explained.

“Everyone thinks when you leave an abusive relationship, ‘good thing you got out in the first place because not everyone survives,'” she added.

“You don’t understand that then you have to start a new journey, which improves relationships with people who are isolated from you,” he noted.

Brown, who campaigns against domestic violence, was awarded an OBE in 2022 for services to charity and vulnerable women.

According to figures, in the UK police authorities receive one call for help every 30 seconds for domestic violence.
