Natalie Portman filed for divorce out of the public eye eight months ago from her partner, French director/choreographer Benjamin Milipent after 11 years of marriage, PEOPLE reports exclusively.

The divorce was finalized last month in France, where the now-ex-couple live with their children, 12-year-old son Aleph and daughter Amalia, 7.

They met in 2009, on the set of the movie “Black Swan”, where the actress starred and Milipent was her choreographer. As they had both mentioned, their love was at first sight.

The crisis in their marriage came last year when Portman learned of Milipent’s extramarital affair with activist and writer Camille Étienne.

“At first it was very difficult for her, but her friends rallied and helped her through the difficult times” a friend of the couple told PEOPLE.

“Natalie is coming off a really difficult and painful year, but on the other hand she is stronger by finding joy in her family, friends and work. Her biggest priority was to ensure a smooth transition for her children,” the source continues.
