Globo and commentator Walter Casagrande won a lawsuit filed by former volleyball player and current federal deputy Maurício Souza (PL-MG). The decision is no longer subject to appeal.
O F5 had access to the case files, which were taking place at the TJ-MG (Court of Justice of Minas Gerais). The lawsuit was filed by Maurício in September 2022, due to criticism made in an edition of Globo Esporte that took place in October 2021.
On the occasion, Maurício Souza used his social networks to criticize a new Superman story, which revealed that Joe Kent, the current journalist who plays the superhero, is bisexual.
“Ah, it’s just a drawing, it’s no big deal. Go with it and you’ll see where we end up…”, said the player, criticizing DC Comics’ decision to portray diversity.
The volleyball player received support for his vision, but he was also widely criticized, even being removed from the volleyball club he defended at the time, Minas.
Casagrande did not let the episode go by and refuted the player’s statements during the Globo Esporte edition. “I’m not surprised at all, this guy is an open and classic homophobe. If you go into a room, there are six Nazis sitting, you go in and sit down, there are seven Nazis. If you defend a homophobe, you are homophobic”, he said.
Maurício says he was offended by Casagrande’s speeches on a TV with great exposure like Globo. He argued that he suffered “damage that would be difficult to repair and be exposed on a sports TV program with a large audience.” He asked for the right to reply, and compensation of R$5 million.
In both instances, the TJ-MG understood that Casagrande did not violate the right to freedom of expression that currently exists in Brazil. Maurício will need to pay the costs of the process and fees.
Wanted by F5, Casagrande confirmed the victory and said he was happy with the result. The team of deputy and former player Maurício Souza did not respond until the last update of this report. Globo does not comment on legal cases.
