“I am honored to have been asked by the V&A to share my life through clothes with the world,” Campbell said in a statement.
It is the museum’s first exhibition to focus on a model’s career and will feature around 100 looks and accessories from fashion’s biggest houses, including Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana, Alexander McQueen and Versace. Among the outfits will be a 1989 Thierry Mugler corset made of plastic and metal, the pink Valentino handmade Pierpaolo Piccioli dress she posed on the steps of the 2019 Met Gala and the unique 12-inch blue sandals she wore and fell during the Vivienne Westwood show in 1993.

The museum’s curator of fashion, Sonnet Stanfill, called Campbell “one of the most prolific and influential figures in contemporary culture”.
Born in London, she attended acting school from an early age and at the age of 8 she started appearing in music videos for Bob Marley and Culture Club. In 1986, while window shopping in Covent Garden, she caught the attention of Beth Boldt, manager of the Synchro Model Agency, and within two years she was appearing on the catwalks of Paris and Milan.
Naomi Campbell was the first black model to be photographed for the cover of French Vogue in 1988 and the first black woman to pose for the cover of American Vogue in 1989.
